Greenspun Hall
4505 S. Maryland Parkway
Box 455007
Las Vegas Nevada 89154-5007
Located at the corner of Maryland Parkway and University Road, Greenspun Hall is home to the College of Urban Affairs, the Brookings West Institute, the Lincy Foundation and School of Journalism and Media Studies. At 120,000 square feet, the five-story building includes a broadcast-friendly 200-set auditorium, high-definition (HD) television studios and post-production facilities, student media laboratories and classrooms, and faculty offices.
The Greenspun Family
Inspired by the storied life of former publisher and journalist Hank Greenspun, the Greenspun family donated 40 percent of the building cost as part of a private-public partnership with the State of Nevada. This was the family's third donation to UNLV, each given to honor Hank Greenpsuns legacy as founder of the Las Vegas Sun newspaper and as one of Nevada's most prominent media professionals. The family's express desire was to create a technologically sophisticated facility to prepare a new generation of multimedia journalists for the local community and beyond. At ground breaking ceremony in 2007, the Greenspun Corporation Chief Executive Officer Brian Greenspun described his family's third gift to UNLV as the “latest step on our journey to build a better community".
Going Green
In keeping with the desire for a better community, the family insisted that Greenspun Hall be designed with the environment in mind, a goal the university supported from the outset. Now newly opened, and meeting the requirements of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, the building includes: a louvered canopy to shade the courtyard and support an extensive solar array that provides about 15 percent of the power needed to run the building; a chilled beam heating and cooling system; extensive use of sustainable interior and exterior building materials; and, of course, drought-resistant desert landscaping. Greenspun Hall was awarded the LEED Gold Certification in 2010.
